Why is it that, in a musical, everyone suddenly bursts into song and dance? Italian choreographer and performer Marco D’Agostin delights in playing with the mechanics of this famously codified genre. He conjures a character who sets out to recount the fall of an asteroid to Earth and the extinction of the dinosaurs. Yet gradually, a strange force takes hold: movement spills beyond speech, the voice slips out of sync, the body spirals, and emotions erupt. The piece transforms into a Broadway-style show, complete with its share of seduction, artifice and dramatic twists. Blending palaeontology, dance and romance, Marco D’Agostin crafts a brilliant score for voice and body, a celebration of life’s extraordinary capacity, and of art itself, to be endlessly reborn in new forms. Love stories may shatter as suddenly as an asteroid striking Earth, but there will always be reasons to hope and to rejoice.
