Ghosts are everywhere, even though our societies try in vain to keep death and the dead at bay: cemeteries have been moved to the outskirts of town, grief has been reduced to something to “process” quickly and efficiently. Following the success of her first work, Les Corps incorruptibles, presented at La Bâtie last year, Aurélia Lüscher continues her playful exploration of death. Her new creation takes the form of a dialogue with her paternal grandmother: the director summons her ghost onto the stage to explore the traces and ties that remain.
Blending documentary research with emotional intimacy, the artist brings to the stage the voices of those who still speak with the beyond. Made of wax and mist, the scenography blurs the boundary between the visible and the invisible. Inspired by works such as Soigner les morts pour guérir les vivants by Magali Molinié and Au bonheur des morts by Vinciane Despret, Lüscher explores “what does not pass away”. Playing with the spectral nature of theatre itself, she evokes the “great passage” from one form to another, whether that be death, or the stage.
